Solutions: After consulting with TrendMark, they decided to expand their kitchen, add a breakfast area and aLoch Haven Remodel-041 large outdoor entertaining area to the back of their home. 80’s Style Makeover. After living in this 1980’s home for over 10 years, the homeowners were ready to remodel and make thier home perfect for their everyday lifestyle and entertaining family and friends. While the home had plenty of square footage for their needs, they didn’t like that the main living areas on the first floor were compartmentalized into so many separate smaller rooms.

With the walls removed the kitchen, family room, living room and dining room now flow together as a large open space. The end result was the perfect flow to enjoy all areas of the home and create a much larger feel. The open floor plan they had always dreamed was created.

5 Tips for Better Bathroom Lighting

Bathroom lighting is more than a necessity for every bathroom. A properly lit bathroom helps to make you and your bathroom look their best as well as ensuring your safety when you are in the Help choosing bathroom lightingbathroom.

1.  Evolution of Bathrooms.  Bathroom lighting is now more complex as bathrooms need many levels of lighting with different functions such as showering, bath area, styling and the sink area for daily tasks. A good lighting design requires multiple lighting types and styles for the highest impact.  It’s a misconception from years past that bathrooms must be brightly lit. Bathrooms have evolved over the last decade from simply functional rooms to mood setting and relaxation rooms. Stylish lights and fixtures will help turn your bathroom space into a luxurious, spa-like retreat.

2.  Lighting Styles, Colors and Designs.  Bathroom lighting comes in so many styles, colors, designs and layouts that even the most selective of homeowners will have plenty of options to choose from–vintage, contemporary, traditional or strikingly modern lighting fixtures. Try adding a bit of whimsy to the bathroom with a mini-chandelier, it will create romantic overtones and make you feel pampered every time you enter.

3.  Mirrors. Mirrors contribute to the bathroom’s ambiance as well. The large sheet mirror found so frequently in bathrooms can be replaced with individual mirrors, framed or unframed, etched or beveled, tilted or flat, round, square or shaped, large or small. Mirrors provide an excellent way to brighten and expand the look of your bathroom and to optimize your selection of lighting.

Bathroom Lighting Raleigh NC Tips TrendMark Inc4.  Ambient Lighting.  Ambient lighting is typically provided by ceiling fixtures or recessed can lighting, and is especially important in the bath because of varied mixtures of materials and finishes, many of them shiny surfaces like wall tile, floor tile and chrome faucets. Ceiling lighting helps to illuminate the rest of the bathroom and can be used in the center of the room or in alcoves to improve overall conform-ability and safety.

5.  Private Retreats.  Now that homeowners are turning their bathrooms into private retreats or home spas, more attention is paid to the selection of lighting fixtures and mirrors. Sleek metal finishes, bold architectural shapes, antique looks, frosted glass, and even hand-painted styles add punches of style to the room. Designer bathroom lighting pieces lend a touch of unique individuality to your home and go a long way to establishing ambiance in your bathroom.

How About You? What do you look for most in lighting for your bathroom oasis? We look forward to your comments below or contact Wallace here.

5 Tips for Choosing a Kitchen Tile Backsplash

Kitchen Backsplash.  One important decision to consider when remodeling your kitchen is the backplash.  There are many quality backsplash options available for homeowners.  This can make a big impact on the overall kitchen remodel.

1.  Colors and Style.  Pick colors and styles that blend with your countertop, cabinetry, and kitchen décor. Busy materials, such as granites with large swirling patterns, will do better with a simpler backsplash. Solid Kitchen tile backsplashcolored counters can handle more decoration.

2.  Types of Tiles. There are many types of tiles to choose from, and they come in all price ranges. In recent years, there has been an explosion of new tile colors, patterns, styles and textures. Ceramic tile is durable, easy to clean, and colorful. A ceramic tile mural framed with pencil rail or chair rail tiles is a stunning focal point above the cooktop. Glass tiles have become very popular. Their shiny luster, opaque tones, and small size offer dimension and beauty in small areas as well as large ones. Metallic glass tiles backed with metallic paint give a three-dimensional effect.

Metal tiles come in brass, polished chrome, copper, or stainless steel. Small mosaic tiles in a random pattern or in multiple colors create visual energy. A stone backsplash goes great with rustic or Mediterranean style kitchens.

TrendMark Kitchen Remodel After3.  Mix Materials? Mixing materials adds extra dimension to the kitchen. Handmade ceramic tiles can be showcased against tumbled marble. Glass mosaic tile can be cut into strips and run through subway tile, as well as framed behind the stove for a dramatic effect. Using decos (inserts placed into the backsplash) for accents is a great way to add some oomph to your design without breaking your budget.

Installing the tile on a diagonal gives an interesting look. Some backsplashes look fantastic when the tile is canted at a 45-degree angle. Or you can use different sizes (1x1s, 4x4s, even 12x12s and 18x12s) and shapes (square, rectangle, broken) of tiles to achieve a unique design.

4.  Borders and Accents.  Most lines of tile have special trim tiles for creating borders and accents and for finishing corners and edges. A rounded-edge tile called a bull-nose is used to finish off the outer edge of the backsplash.

5.  Cost Consideration.  As with any other remodeling project, the costs vary with your choices. Special order tiles can be  expensive to ship. Elaborate designs combining several types of tiles are labor-intensive and can increase the installation costs. Certain colors, styles or types of tiles are more expensive, but in the end can be the difference between ordinary and spectacular, will set off your cabinetry and appliances, and will become a focal point for your kitchen.

How About You?  What is your favorite backsplash tile option?  Have you seen backsplash tile installed on a diagonal?  Did you like the look?

Selecting a Kitchen Sink

When remodeling your kitchen, selecting a kitchen sink is a very important decision as there are several factors to take into consideration.

Decor.  Imagine how the sink will fit in with your décor. Do you want a sleek stainless steel sink to match your appliances? Stainless-steel sinks clean easily and don’t chip, but they tend to show scratches. Expect to pay anywhere from $350 to $800 for a quality stainless sink.

Kitchen sink replacement

TrendMark, Inc. Kitchen Sink Replacement

Your Kitchen Style. If you are looking for the country or Provençal-style kitchens, apron or farmhouse sinks are quite popular. They usually consist of one large bowl with an exposed front panel like those found in historic farmhouses or the French cottages. These are enameled cast iron or steel. This type of kitchen sink is formed with a coating of porcelain fused to the metal. The cast iron versions, though a bit more costly, are stronger and tend to be less noisy than steel, but come in many different colors. Though relatively easy to clean, they do tend to chip and can stain. An enameled sink will run between $300 and $1,500 but its ability to heighten your décor is invaluable.

Kitchen Sink Options.  With your style in mind, determine how many basins you want and where you want to place them. The National Kitchen & Bath Association recommends a single, large bowl for kitchens less than 150 square feet, a double bowl for larger kitchens, and even a third small salad-prep sink. For corner, angled and peninsula installations, consider placing two separate undercounter basins side-by-side to function as one sink.

Mounting.  The next factor is how the sink is mounted. Surface-mounted sinks, by far the most common types found in today’s kitchens, have a self-rimming edge or need an additional (usually metal) rim to join it to the counter surface. A few sinks have what is called “tile-in” edges that mount flush with a tiled counter surface for a more appealing appearance.

Under-mounted sinks fasten to the countertop on the underside, so the exposed edges of the counter sink opening must be finished. You’ll also have to drill holes in the countertop for the faucet or mount the fixture on the wall behind. Under-mounted sinks make for easier cleanups, look more elegant and provide a smooth transition from countertop to sink.

trendmarkinc-logoFaucets.  Faucet choices will enhance and compliment the sink, and you can add accessories like a cutting board, rinse baskets, colanders, a soap/lotion dispenser, hot water dispenser, a filtered water faucet, or a drinking faucet

Research.  The sink is the center of a kitchen, used every day by all the family members. With so many choices, you can see why it’s worth your while to do some research before making your selection. Decide if this is an area where you want to splurge or prefer to save. Consider both the long term significance to yourself and to the home’s resale value.
